Preparing for Surgery
At Northern Hospital we make every effort
to ensure that your surgical experience
is efficient and uncomplicated, but to do
so we need your help. To prepare for your
surgery, please follow these tips:
- Discuss with your physician the risks
and benefits of your procedure. If you
have questions, please speak with your
doctor or write your questions down so
that we may help answer them.
- If you smoke, quit or cut down.
- Shower and shampoo your hair before
your surgery. You may be asked to scrub
the skin where the surgery will be done.
Please be aware that hair in that area
of your body may be shaved or trimmed
at the hospital.
- Prior to surgery, please notify your
physician of any change in your condition,
such as a bad cold or sore throat.
- Follow any other instructions you've
been given.
- Call the hospital at (336) 719-7054 between 2:00pm and 4:00pm the day before your surgery to confirm when you need to arrive. .
- NPO - Nothing by Mouth - Unless told
otherwise, do not eat or drink anything
after midnight the night before your surgery.
This includes water, chewing gum and mints.
You can brush your teeth and rinse your
mouth, but please don't swallow the water.
It you have been told to take any medications,
take them with small sips of water.
The Day of Surgery
- Be on time to your appointment.
- Wear loose fitting clothes. Don't wear
makeup, hair spray, perfume or nail polish.
Leave jewelry, credit cards, rings, watches
and other valuables at home.
- If your child is having surgery, bring
along their favorite toy or blanket to
help them feel more comfortable. Also
bring formula or any special food your
child needs.
- Know your medical history before we
begin your procedure. If you are taking
any herbs, mineral supplements or medications
please notify the pre-op nurse or anesthesiologist
to reduce your risk of drug interactions.
That includes medications such as inhalers,
nebulizers, insulin, or any other medications
that you routinely use.
- You will be given an identification
band with your name on it to wear on your
wrist.
- You will change into a hospital gown
and may be asked to remove contact lenses,
hearing aids or dentures.
- You may be given an intravenous (IV)
line for fluids and medications.
During and After your Surgery
- Our staff is here to serve you. Please
let us know if you are cold or uncomfortable
so that we can assist you.
- You will be given written instructions
to follow after your surgery. Your discharge
nurse will explain these to you and your
family before you leave. If there are
any questions once you arrive home, please
contact your physician.
Your Visitors
Your family and friends are welcome to wait
in our surgical waiting room located on
the first floor just outside the operating
room. The waiting room is staffed by volunteers
who can provide your loved ones with updates
on the progress of your surgery, upon request.
