Volunteers Receive State's Highest Honor 9/28/2009
The Northern Hospital of Surry County Volunteers were recently awarded the Five Star Award, the highest award given at State level by the North Carolina Society of Hospital Volunteers/Auxilians, for their Volunteering Excellence. A group of volunteers from Northern Hospital who were attending the 2009 Annual Educational Conference & Vendor Mart in Greensboro, North Carolina on September 13-15 accepted the award on behalf of the group.

In order to receive this award, points must be earned in 26 different categories, which include: initiate or update a new volunteer service, write or update job descriptions, publish a newsletter, send a delegate to legislative day, as well as other district and state meetings, and others. Auxiliary members say the conference is a wonderful opportunity allowing volunteers and volunteer directors to network with other volunteers from across the state, share ideas, and gain education on various workshop topics. Also, a vendor mart is presented to allow volunteers to see the potential fundraising options of various sales that can be held in their hospital to benefit auxiliary programs and scholarship funds.

The Volunteers were also awarded the “Patient Related Award” for their project submission on the Wii gaming console that was recently purchased for the Northern Surry Skilled Nursing Unit. Projects are judged on originality and the ability to improve patients’ daily activities. The Volunteers purchased the Wii in 2008 with monies from recent fundraisers. The unique interactive setup of the Wii has helped to improve motor skills of the skilled residents. It provides fun as well as exercise to strengthen limbs. Residents have been playing Wii games with volunteers, staff, their children and grandchildren.

The Volunteer Program at Northern Hospital has over 200 volunteers plus Eagle students, and the summer junior volunteer program. Anyone interested in volunteering their time may contact Kaye Puckett, Director of Volunteer Services 719-7285.
