Gastroenterology is the medical specialty which deals with disorders and conditions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Three of the most common ailments requiring treatment or evaluation by a gastroenterologist are gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn; ulcers; and colorectal cancer.

We at Northern Hospital are excited to offer a technology that better assists our local gastroenterology specialists in diagnosing disorders of the small intestine. The Capsule Endoscope, or camera in a pill, was pioneered by Given Imaging Corporation to give patients a non-invasive option for diagnosis of certain small intestine disorders.
