Urology
Through the use of high-tech procedures, our urologists are able to reduce the length of stay for their patients. With the recent addition of new surgical equipment, patients who are treated for benign prostatic hypertrophy with the new TUNA procedure are now able to go home the same day.

Urology Services offered include:
Prostate Surgery - traditional surgery and new minimally invasive surgery
Penile Implants
Kidney Stone Removal (laser lithotripsy)
Bladder Surgery
Lithotripsy

Piedmont Stone Center will begin providing extracorporeal shock wave mobile lithotripsy services to Northern Hospital of Surry County on Friday, January 7, 2005 and continuing every other Friday thereafter. Dr. Talluri Balaji and Dr. Davis Hart of Surry Urological Associates will be utilizing this service for their patients.

The mobile lithotripter provides non-surgical treatment of kidney stones by using shock waves to break up the stones into very small fragments, allowing them to pass through the body naturally. Patients treated by lithotripsy recover more rapidly than with surgical treatment. The benefits of lithotripsy over the surgical removal of kidney stones, is the treatment of typically last only 30 to 90 minutes and an overnight stay in the hospital is not normally required. The recovery time is generally 1 to 3 days compared to surgery recovery times which can be as much as 4 to 6 weeks. Pain associated with this treatment is minimal.
