It is the policy of Northern Hospital that all new employees and volunteers must complete New Employee Orientation prior to starting their new position.  Here you will learn about Northern Hospital, what it is like to work here, and what is expected from you as a staff member.  Presentations provide opportunities to hear from some of NHSC’s leadership while learning about all Northern Hospital has to offer in your new career. Inclement Weather: All Northern Hospital classes, including General Orientation, follow the area (Surry Community College) inclement weather attendance announcement. Please refer to WXII or other local news stations for delays and closings. 

  • If Surry Community College cancels classes by 7:00 am; Hospital Orientation sessions will be cancelled. HR staff will contact you regarding a make-up General Orientation and start date. 
  • If Surry Community College has a “delayed start” or cancels classes after 7:00am, Orientation sessions will start at the normal time.

Dress Code: Business casual attire is required to be worn to General, Clinical and Nursing Orientation. Please refer to Employee Dress Policy for appropriate dress code. Consider wearing layered clothing to Orientation since the room temperature may not be comfortable for each individual.

On Day Two, Non Clinical staff will be dismissed from General Orientation between Noon and 2:00 pm . Uniform may be required if you will be spending the remainder of your day on a unit requiring uniform dress.

Location: New Employee Orientation will be held in the Education Center Classroom, ground level near the Patient Discharge Entrance.

Healthcare Credentials: Employees who are required to have current healthcare credentials must present their licensure to the Human Resources staff for verification prior to General Orientation. This licensure may include RN, LPN, AART, RRT, BCLS (CPR), ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC or ENPC. Please note only American Heart Association CPR is accepted at Northern Hospital. If you require recertification for BCLS, ACLS, PALS or NRP please click here for a schedule of classes.

Lunch: The cafeteria is on the ground floor of the hospital. All hospital employees receive a discount on some hot bar items. You must have your employee badge on to receive the discount. Lunch will be provided to you on your first day of General Orientation. 

Employee Photo ID Badge: Employee photo ID badges will be made prior to the General Orientation program and will be distributed on the first day of General Orientation. 

Medication Assessment: Nurses are required to take a Medication Assessment Test during Orientation Week. All ICU, SDU, Medical Surgical, ED. DSU, and PACU nurses will take a cardiac rhythm strip recognition test; Upon completion these will be turned in to the unit Department Manager. 

Bedside Glucose / Waived Testing: All RNs, LPNs, Graduate Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Techs will attend Bedside Glucometer/Waived Testing on Day Two of General Orientation. Clinical staff not required to take Bedside Glucometer/Waived Testing will go directly to IT Computer Lab for NetLearning CBL completions.

Nursing Orientation: All new Nursing staff are required to attend a one day Nursing Orientation which is held on Day Two of General Orientation.

Location: Nursing Orientation sessions will be held in the Education Center Classroom, ground level near the Patient Discharge Entrance in the Education Center Classroom.

Daily Schedule for Orientation/Nursing Orientation

Day One: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (All new hires, clinical and non-clinical)

Day Two: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (non-clinical only)

Day Two for new Nursing staff (RNs and LPNs): 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (includes Beside Glucometer / POC Training 9:30 am to 11:30 am for all RNs, LPNs, NAs and PCT II's)

Day Three for Clinical: 8:00 am to 12 Noon for PCS Training (all RNs, LPNs, NAs, PCTs, RT, PT, and OT)

Day Four for Clinical: 8:00 am to 12 Noon for PCS Training (RNs and LPNs only)
